M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements
Direct Ecology acted as the Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) for the major M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements project over the course of several years. We provided specialist ecological advice to the environmental managers, engineers and contractors, and acted as liaison with both SNH and the client. During the project, Direct Ecology undertook a range of services including:
- pre-works survey for mammals
- licensed works with regards to badger setts and construction of artificial badger setts
- specialist bat surveys including nocturnal and tree-climbing surveys
- otter surveys and the subsequent acquisition of otter development licences
- licensed water vole trapping and translocation
- nesting bird checks
- invasive species survey
Direct Ecology worked closely with the organisations involved in this major infrastructure project, advising on mitigation measures for the various ecological receptors throughout the project. We organised, co-ordinated and undertook large ongoing programmes of survey and supervision, and were able to respond quickly and effectively to requests for advice and services on a day-to-day basis. We aimed to facilitate the smooth progression of the project whilst achieving the best possible outcome for wildlife, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and best practice at every stage.
