Red squirrels and their dreys are fully protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as amended by the Nature Conservation Scotland Act (2004) in Scotland and the Countryside and Rights of Way (CROW) Act 2000 in England and Wales  If suitable habitat is present within their natural range (predominately northern England and Scotland) with suitable habitat including coniferous or mixed woodland, full survey should take place and if required, appropriate mitigation measures put in place.  Direct Ecology can provide this service including liaison with the statutory government body (SNH in Scotland). Hair tube surveys can also be undertaken in order to determine if red or grey squirrel are present on a site. 

Pine Marten

Pine marten and their resting up sites are fully protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as amended by the Nature Conservation Scotland Act (2004) in Scotland and the Countryside and Rights of Way (CROW) Act 2000 in England and Wales.  If suitable habitat is present (e.g. coniferous or mixed woodland and rocky open ground) within their natural range (predominantly north of the Central Belt of Scotland), survey should take place and if required, appropriate mitigation measures put in place.  Direct Ecology can provide this service including liaison with the statutory government body (SNH in Scotland).
